Doing It Yourself
Alpine's housing stock centers around 1998, right in the same window as the wider 1977-2015 range across the areas we serve. That means most garages already have working 120V circuits and factory bracket points, so the electrical side of a DIY install isn't the hard part. The hard part is the header bracket and travel limits on a heavier insulated door - get the force setting wrong and the opener either won't close all the way or slams down on a car bumper. We also see people wire the safety sensors a few inches too high, which passes a quick test but fails the first time a bike or a stroller rolls through the beam. If you're comfortable with a drill and a torque wrench, the panel swap itself isn't beyond a reasonable DIYer. Getting the safety reversal and force settings within code is where we'd push you to call instead of guess.
How Long It Takes
A straight swap - old opener out, new belt-drive unit in, on an existing header bracket - runs a few hours once we're on site. Alpine is about 12 miles from our shop in Orem, so figure that drive time into when we can get there and back in a single visit. Homes built closer to 1998 usually have standard 7-foot rough openings and a bracket already in place, which keeps the job simple. Where it stretches longer is if the door itself is heavier than the old opener was rated for - not uncommon on the insulated double doors common in this price range - because then we're also checking spring tension and cable balance before we ever touch the opener rail. We'd rather add half an hour to check that than hand back a unit that burns out its gears in eight months.
What It Costs
We don't have a fixed price to quote here without seeing the door, the opener you want, and whether the header bracket needs any rework - so we're not going to make up a number. What we can tell you is that the cost driver on an Alpine job is almost always the door weight, not the distance. A heavier insulated double door calls for a stronger opener and sometimes reinforced bracket hardware, and that's where the estimate moves. We'll give you a real number on site before anything gets installed, not a range pulled from a website.
How We Fix It
We come out from our Orem location, about 12 miles away, so we schedule Alpine visits together with other calls in this part of the service area when we can. On site, we start by checking the door itself - weight, balance, spring tension - before we touch the opener, because an opener install on an unbalanced door just moves the problem downstream. We size the unit to the door, not the other way around, mount to a checked header bracket, and test the safety reversal and sensor alignment before we call the job done. For homes built around the late 1990s, the existing wiring and rough opening usually cooperate; where they don't, we say so up front rather than force a part that's wrong for the house.
