What Causes It Around Here
Two things stack up here: age and cold. American Fork sits in the same cold-moderate climate band as the rest of the area we cover, which means winter temperature swings that are hard on old drive belts and on the grease inside a chain-drive gearbox. Grease that was fine in July gets stiff in January, and a gearbox already worn from twenty-some years of cycles has less margin to push through that stiffness. That's often the exact week the gear finally strips.
Across the wider service area - homes built anywhere from 1977 to 2015, with a median around 1999 - you get openers from a lot of different generations. American Fork's own median of 1995 puts a lot of its houses on the earlier side of that range, meaning more of them are still running first- or second-generation chain drives rather than the belt-drive units that showed up later.
