What Causes It Around Here
The failure we see most in Lehi is impact damage to a single panel section - a car bumper, a basketball, a trailer hitch backing in wrong - because these are mostly newer subdivisions with two- and three-car garages and driveways that see a lot of daily traffic. That's a different pattern from older stock, where we're more often chasing warped wood panels or rust at the bottom section from decades of exposure.
Cold is still a factor here, same as across the rest of the service area - this is a cold-moderate climate band, and steel panels contract in hard freezes, which can crack a foam core that's already got a hairline stress fracture from an old dent. That's the honest limitation: a panel that's been quietly cracked for a year can look fine in July and split wide open in a January cold snap. We can't always tell from a photo whether a dent is cosmetic or already compromised underneath. If we're not sure, we say so on-site before we quote a fix instead of after.

How It Shows Up
The tell on a bad panel in a newer door is usually a dent that doesn't pop back and a door that still runs but drags or binds slightly at that section when it travels. Sometimes there's daylight showing through a hairline crack that wasn't there a season ago. If the whole door is racking - leaning or twisting as it opens - the panel damage has likely pulled the track with it, not just the skin.
A lot of homeowners in this area, with houses mostly built in the 2000s, assume a dent is purely cosmetic because the door still opens fine. Sometimes that's true. Sometimes the core underneath is already separated and the next hard freeze finishes the job.
