How We Fix It
We pull the damaged section, unhook it from the rollers and hinges, and check whether the track and hardware took any damage from whatever hit the door. On a door this age the hardware is usually still true, so the swap is mechanical - new panel in, hinges and rollers reattached, cables and springs rebalanced for the new panel weight if it's not identical to the old one. We match paint and insulation type as close as the manufacturer allows; exact factory color match isn't always possible on a door that's been sitting in the sun for fifteen-plus years, and we'll tell you that up front rather than promise a seam you can't see.
What Can Go Wrong
A cracked or dented panel on its own rarely stops a door from running, but it changes how the door sits in the track, and that's where the real trouble starts. On a door built to newer, wider dimensions, a bent panel throws off alignment more than it would on a narrower older door, because there's more steel flexing off true. Leave it and the rollers start chewing into the track edge, or a cable jumps its drum. We've also seen owners try to hammer a dent flat - steel that thin from 2000s-era doors tends to crease rather than pop back, so that usually turns one repair into a full-panel job.
How It Shows Up
Most calls start the same way: a visible dent or a crack along one panel seam, sometimes with the door still opening fine, sometimes with it starting to bind partway up. On the wider doors common in Highland, a single damaged panel section can throw a visible wave into the door when it's down, more obvious than it would be on a narrower door because there's more surface catching the light. If the door has started making a grinding or rubbing sound where it didn't before, that's usually the roller fighting a track edge the bent panel pushed out of alignment - worth a call before it wears the track itself.
